Summer summer summer time. What started as a summer seasonal back in 1997 has proven to be the longest running seasonal for Saint Arnold; quite appropriate considering summer seems like it’s about 10 months of the year! Houston summer is long and brutal, and I always know to brace myself when I begin seeing Saint Arnold Summer Pils cans on the shelf.

Those rainbow cans with their mosaic of tie-dye color are always a nod to stock up on charcoal and beers that are on the lighter side of the spectrum. The colors of the cans were inspired by a customer named Hunter that tie-dyed Saint Arnold shirts for himself years ago. Even with their brand refresh, the artwork is still super distinct on the shelves.

Speaking of appearance, Summer Pils looks perfect. P E R F E C T. Bright, straw-yellow, brilliantly clear like a diamond, chalk-white head with tight little bubbles and delicate lacing. Saint Arnold’s brewing team dialed this recipe in for 9 years before calling it complete. It shows. Literally.

As I stick my beak into the glass before each sip, I’m greeted by gentle, welcoming, light and grainy crackery notes with no sulfuric notes. There’s a hint of spicy hop aroma that’s almost indistinguishable.

It’s distinguishable on each sip, though! Each crisp, refreshing sip of this German delight is a reminder that simplicity is deceiving. Nuance. Finesse. Balance. These things all come to mind when thinking of how to describe this summer time crispy boi. The light, grainy aroma carries into the flavor, and the finish is mild with spice from the noble hops.

It’s just a beer flavored beer at the end of the day, and that’s what I appreciate most about it! It’s also killer with some Mambo’s Michelada mix. In fact, it’s one of the best michelada beers on Houston shelves!

This is a great option to keep on deck for your friends that think craft beer is nothing but IPAs. Bud Light, Miller Light, Coors Light, whatever their preference is, they’ll likely be able to appreciate how simple Summer Pils is while also recognizing the care and craft that went into it.

Saint Arnold Summer Pils

It’s no surprise that this beer has won 7 GABF medals, including 2 golds and 5 silvers. As much as I miss 5 O’clock Pils, Saint Arnold Summer Pils will always have a spot in my fridge every summer.
